Sages who had immense powers, known as ‘Siddhars’ were the ones who formulated the Siddha medicine. The resultant medicine was prepared after thorough research done on herbs, minerals and animals. The father of ‘Siddham Vaidyam’ is Guru Agasthiyar.
There are also 18 sages who were the followers of the primordial Guru Agasthiyar. These sages rendered their knowledge and experience for the development of Siddham Vaidyam immensely. One of the main objectives of Siddham is: “Prevention is better than cure”. Critics argue that Siddha form of medicine is a philosophy based, rather than a science based form of medicine that postulates imbalances in three vital humors to explain disease.
However, Siddha form of Vaidyam is not merely based on philosophy alone but also on INNER EXPERIENTIAL SCIENCE. It is best suited for chronic ailments for which in most cases the root causes. Constipation, Depression, Chronic back pain are some of the cases where the treatment is effective.
Siddha form of medicine is not effective for ailments caused due to external factors such as microbes. Patients who undertake Siddha form of treatment will be asked to avoid non vegetarian food, tamarind, tomatoes for a specific time period of time (till the treatment concludes). The basic concepts of Siddha medicine are similar to Ayurveda.
One of the notable differences between Siddha and Ayurveda is that Siddha recognizes predominance of Vaatha, Pittha and Kapha in childhood, adulthood and old age respectively. Whereas, in Ayurveda it is totally reversed: Kapha is dominant in childhood, Vaata in Oldage and Pittha in Adults.

Such medicines are derived from flora, fauna and other mineral resources of Mother Nature. The original literature of Siddha form of medicine is in Tamil and efforts need to be expended by the Government to translate it into different languages for better administration of such medicines.
