AYURVEDA DOES NOT RECOMMEND GARLIC AND ONIONS

WHY AYURVEDA DOES NOT RECOMMEND GARLIC AND ONIONS ?

Onions and Garlic do not find a place in the healing diets prescribed by Ayurveda. Ayurveda Doctors opine that this form of medicine looks into food based on Rasas and Gunas. It defines nutritional properties of food based six tastes – sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringe and their qualities – Sattva, Rajas and Tamas.

In Ayurveda Onions and Garlic are considered Tamasik and Rajasic which increase bile and heat in the body. The consumption of onion and garlic results in anger, aggression, ignorance, over stimulation of the senses and increase in sexual desire. It is also said Garlic causes burns of the mucous membranes of the oesophagus and the stomach, generating spasm which leads to weakness and malfunction of the digestive organs.

Onion and Garlic are considered as more of a medicine than food in Ayurveda. It is recommended to avoid onion for those who are spiritually inclined as they stimulate the central nervous system and can negate the practice of celibacy. Garlic is a natural aphrodisiac. Ayurveda suggests that it is a tonic for loss of sexual power, sexual debility and impotency.

There are also adverse theories on the use of Garlic and Onions. Some of the facts not many people know is that garlic in the raw state can carry harmful (potentially fatal) botulism bacteria. A Roman poet Horace once wrote on Garlic that it is “more harmful than hemlock”.

The Taoists (Taoism is an ancient tradition of philosophy and religious belief that is deeply rooted in Chinese customs and worldview; followers of Taoism are known as Taoists) said that these pungent vegetables carry enzymes which cause “extra foul odour from perspiration, lewd indulgences, enhance agitations and aggressiveness when eaten raw” In 1980’s a research on human brain function by Dr Robert Beck had found that garlic has a detrimental effect on brain.

It is found that in fact garlic is toxic to humans as its sulphone hydroxyl ions penetrate the blood brain barriers and are poisonous to brain cells. Dr Beck said that garlic reduced reaction time of Pilots by two or three times when consumed by pilots taking flight tests. The toxic effects of garlic desynchronize brain waves. Homeopathy – yet another widely practiced alternate form of medicine says that red onion produces dry cough, watery eyes, sneezing and other familiar cold related symptoms when consumed.
